M.PHIL LEADING TO PH.D (BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION):
NUST
Institute of Management Sciences (NIMS) is endeavoring to become as one of the
top business schools in the country by providing high quality education. NIMS
was amongst the first national institutes which started a PhD program in the
field of Management Sciences.
In
order to stay a step with the rapid changes that are taking place in the global
economy and the corporate sector, NIMS regularly reviews and updates its
curriculum for various programs. Recently, a comprehensive review of the
undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum has been completed. Our recent
experience shows a growing demand for specialization in the following areas: (i)
Business Finance, (ii) Marketing and International Business, and (iii)
Management.
This
has been taken into consideration in the development of the revised curriculum
for M.Phil Leading to Ph.D Program. The M.Phil (Business Administration) Program
comprises 12 credit hours of core courses, 18 credit hours of specialization
courses, and 6 credit hours of dissertation. The Ph.D program comprises 48
credit hours of course work (21 credits of core and compulsory courses and 27
credits of specialization courses) and 30 credits of Ph.D dissertation / thesis
research. The prescribed course work for Ph.D includes 12 credit hours of core
courses and 18 credit hours of specialization courses as completed at the M.Phil
level. The details of the program are given below:
M.Phil Level Core
Courses:
The following would be the core
courses for the M.Phil program in (Business Administration). Each M.Phil and
Ph.D student will have to successfully complete these courses:
1.
ECO801 Microeconomic Theory & Business Applications
2.
ECO802 Macroeconomic Theory in a Business Environment
3.
ECO803 Econometrics & its Application to Business Analysis
4.
MGT816 Advances in Management Theory, Issues & Practices
M.Phil Specialization
Courses:
Each
M.Phil student, in addition to the successful completion of core courses of 12
credit hours, will have to successfully complete course work equivalent to 18
credit hours from the list of courses given in either of the following
specialization fields:
1.
Business
Finance
2.
Management
3.
Marketing
Presently specialization field of business finance
only is offered to students.
Ph.D Level Courses
After successful completion of 30 credit
hours of M.Phil level course work and comprehension examination, those students
who are allowed to proceed to Ph.D Program will have to complete the following
course work:
Nine credit
hours of compulsory course work as given below:

MGT951 Doctoral Seminar in
Management Science Techniques and Their Applications.

MGT952 Doctoral Seminar in
Corporate Governance.

MGT953 Doctoral Seminar in Research
Methods.
Nine credit hours of
specialization courses from either of the following specialization fields:

Business Finance

Management
-
Marketing
Regulations for M.Phil Leading to Ph.D (Business Administration) Program
Requirements for M.Phil (Business Administration):
The
National University of Sciences & Technology shall award M.Phil (Business
Administration) degree after fulfillment of the following requirements:
1. Successful
completion of 30 credit hours of course work (12 credits of core courses and 18
credits of specialization courses) and 6 credits of research dissertation /
thesis, scoring the prescribed grades and grade point averages.
2. Scoring
the final Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 3.5 out of 4.0.
3. Successful
completion of the comprehension examination conducted by NIMS.
4 Positive
report for passing M.Phil dissertation by evaluators as appointed per “NUST
Policy for Conduct and Award of Ph.D Degree for Engineering, Information
Technology and Management Sciences”
5. Positive
recommendation for the acceptance of M.Phil dissertation by the defence
Committee.
Admission
General Admission Requirements:
All students of “M.Phil Leading to Ph.D (Business
Administration) Program” will be initially admitted to M.Phil Program only.
Later on, their status may be changed from M.Phil to Ph.D as explained in
section 3.
The following are the requirements for admission to
the M.Phil program:
1. MBA/MPA/MBE/MBA-IT/M.COM/Masters in
Economics with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or 70% marks.
2. Minimum of 16 years of education with 130
credits after F.A / F.Sc.
3. A maximum of one second division in
Matriculation through Bachelor degree. No third division shall be accepted.
4.
Passing HEC / NUST GRE Test or GRE (International) Test.
5.
Qualifying the interview and test conducted by NIMS and achievement of a high
merit.
6. Some practical experience with reputable
national or international organizations, will be preferred.
7. Approval of the Rector for admission.
Change of Status of the Student from
M.Phil to Ph.D:
1. Each M.Phil student, after the successful
completion of 12 credits of core courses and 18 credits of specialization
courses, will be given a comprehension examination covering the course work
completed by him / her. Afterwards, only outstanding students as selected by
NIMS Ph.D Committee, will be allowed to pursue the Ph.D course work prescribed
for Ph.D phase of the program. The remaining students will be required to
successfully complete a thesis worth 6 credit hours in order to earn an M.Phil
degree.
Requirements for Ph.D (Business
Administration) Degree:
The National
University of Sciences & Technology shall award Ph.D (Business Administration)
degree after the fulfillment of following requirements:
- Successful completion of 48 credit
hours of course work (21 credits of core and compulsory courses and 27 credits
of specialization courses including those transferred from M.Phil Program) and
30 credits of research dissertation/thesis, scoring the prescribed grades and
grade point average.

Successful completion of pre-requisite and basic
courses as prescribed by Guidance and Examination Committee.

Scoring the final Cumulative Grade Point Average
of not less than 3.5 out of 4.0.

Successful completion of the Ph.D comprehensive
exams conducted by NIMS.

Receiving positive reports for passing the Ph.D
thesis / dissertation by at least two experts from technologically advanced
countries and one expert from Pakistan.
- Positive report for passing the Ph.D thesis /
dissertation by the Doctoral defence Committee and its recommendation for the
award of Ph.D degree after fulfillment of the requirement of publication and
presentation of research papers from the thesis.
A
Ph.D student must have a minimum of two research papers from the thesis
published / read in an HEC approved journal / conferences of international
repute. Out of these two papers, at least one paper must be published in an HEC
approved journal. Only those publications related to research work will be
counted in which the student’s name appears as the 1st or 2nd
author (provided the 1st author happens to be his / her supervisor)
Note:
All PhD courses will be taught using current literature
in each topic and area. Latest research, case studies, and projects on
contemporary issues will provide the reference material for teaching. Latest
textbooks dealing with advanced topics in Management Sciences will only be used
as supplementary readers.
